The Messenger Scarf Goes Around the Yard
Each child waits at a cone in a big circle around the yard, and a scarf travels by running from one child to the next until it gets back to the first. The whole class tries to get the scarf all the way around before the song ends, practicing short sprints, handing off and shared effort.
How to play
- Set the cones in a big circle about four steps apart and have each child stand at one (1 min).
- The teacher shows the handoff: run to my friend, put the scarf in their hand and stay at their cone (1 min).
- First lap with no music, slowly, to learn the route (1 min).
- The song plays: the scarf has to go all the way around before it ends, and everyone cheers by calling out the runner's name (2 min).
- Repeat in the other direction and celebrate if the scarf gets home before the song is over (2 min).
Rules
- I wait at my cone with my hand open.
- We hand the scarf over, we don't throw it.
- After passing the scarf, I stay at my new cone.
- We cheer for the runner by name.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, put the cones closer and have the teacher run beside the scarf on the first lap.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, play as described, in both directions.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, two colored scarves start from opposite sides at once and both have to make it home.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: give a shorter stretch, or a buddy brings the scarf and the child hands it on to the next friend.
- Hearing impairment: the waiting child raises an arm so the runner can see them, and the teacher signals the end of the song with a gesture.
- Autism: mark the direction of travel with arrows on the ground.
Learning goals
- Run short stretches at a good pace.
- Hand an object to a classmate.
- Feel part of a whole-class achievement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Scarf: 1
- Cones: 25
- Music
Teacher tip
Use a big, brightly colored scarf so everyone can follow it. Kids often run back to their own cone, so practice slowly that “I stay where I land.”
