The Magic Scanner Checks My Body
In pairs, one child lies still while the other moves their hands just above the partner's body without touching, like a magic scanner checking that everything is calm, with a soft beep at each part. It builds stillness, body awareness and attention to a partner.
How to play
- The teacher is the scanner with one child: hands move a few inches above the body, never touching, with a soft "beep" at each part (1 min).
- In pairs: one lies face up very still and the scanner starts at the feet (1 min).
- It moves slowly up the legs, tummy, arms and head; if a part wiggles, the scanner waits for it to calm down (1 min).
- When finished, it says "All calm" and we switch roles (1 min).
- Both lie down and scan themselves on the inside, thinking about each part with eyes closed (1 min).
Rules
- The scanner doesn't touch; it just passes over.
- The child lying down doesn't move.
- The beep is soft.
- Each part waits its turn.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher scans several kids while the others lie still waiting their turn.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, in pairs as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the scanner names each part as it passes ("knee, tummy, elbow") and the child relaxes it a little more.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: scan while seated in a chair.
- Visual impairment: the child lying down feels the warmth of the hands and the scanner whispers where it is.
- Autism: often a favorite since there's no touch; preview the order of body parts.
Learning goals
- Hold still.
- Pay attention to each part of the body.
- Respect a partner's space.
Teacher tip
Stress the distance: "a hand's width of air between your hand and the body." It often turns into tickling; remind them the scanner is magic because it works without touching.
