The Lying-Down Body Puzzle
Each child is a piece of a puzzle built on the floor: the teacher places them lying down, one by one with a gentle touch, until together they form a big sun. It brings calm through stillness, breathing and the feeling of being part of something together.
How to play
- Everyone stands still like pieces in the box. The teacher explains that we're going to build a very special puzzle with our bodies (1 min).
- The teacher gently touches one child's shoulder, walks them to the middle and has them curl up on the floor: that's the center of the sun (1 min).
- One by one, when the teacher touches them, the others lie on their backs as rays of the sun, heads toward the center (2 min).
- With the puzzle complete, we breathe together: breathing in, the sun shines (spread your fingers), and breathing out, it rests (1 min).
- The teacher takes a pretend photo, “click!”, and the pieces slowly get up one at a time, starting from the center (1 min).
Rules
- Wait for the teacher's touch before moving.
- Lie down carefully, without stepping on anyone.
- The puzzle doesn't talk: it breathes.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a simple shape (a long line like a snake), with the teacher walking each child to their spot by the hand.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the sun with rays.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a flower or a star, and a child helps the teacher place pieces by looking at a drawing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the wheelchair can be the center of the sun, or the child lies on a mat with help.
- Autism: if touch is unwelcome, the teacher softly says the child's name instead, and they can be a ray at the edge.
- Visual impairment: the teacher walks the child to their spot by the hand and describes the sun they're making.
Learning goals
- Relax lying down in silence.
- Control the body to settle in a precise spot.
- Feel part of a shared shape.
Teacher tip
Take a real photo from above if you can: they love seeing it afterward. The usual mistake is everyone wanting to be the center; say from the start that it'll be someone different each day.
