The Invisible String That Sits Me Tall
Sitting on the floor, children imagine an invisible string pulling the top of their head toward the ceiling and try sitting curled like a shrimp and tall like a giraffe. They become aware of their sitting posture while calming down.
How to play
- Sit criss-cross and the teacher pretends to tie an invisible string to the top of each child’s head (1 min).
- Shrimp: let go of the string and curl forward with a rounded back; notice how hard it is to breathe (1 min).
- Giraffe: the teacher pulls the string and we grow tall with a straight back and relaxed shoulders; breathing feels easier (1 min).
- Switch back and forth, “shrimp” and “giraffe,” slower and slower, until we stay giraffes (1 min).
- Sitting like giraffes, close your eyes, rest hands on knees and take three slow breaths before heading back to class (1 min).
Rules
- Everyone stays in their own spot with space on each side.
- Changes are slow, no flopping.
- At the end we stay tall and quiet.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, do just shrimp and giraffe, with the teacher gently touching the top of the head for anyone who wants.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the teacher only says the word and children find the posture without a model.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, also try it sitting in chairs and compare how the feet and back are supported.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it in the child’s own wheelchair, working only on growing tall and curling the trunk.
- Autism: the teacher asks before touching the head and, if the child prefers, uses only the gesture in the air.
- Hearing loss: use two fixed signs, a falling hand for shrimp and a rising hand for giraffe.
Learning goals
- Become aware of posture while sitting.
- Notice how posture changes breathing.
- Calm down before the next task.
Teacher tip
Works great right before circle time or table work: afterward just say “String!” and they sit back up. Don’t aim for stiff soldiers: the giraffe is tall but relaxed.
