The Hoop Family, Biggest to Smallest
Together, without rushing, children line up a family of hoops from biggest to smallest and then sit inside them according to size. They practice comparing and ordering sizes by sight and relax with slow movements.
How to play
- In a circle, the teacher puts mixed hoops of different sizes in the middle and we introduce them: dad, mom, big brother and baby (1 min).
- Taking turns, a child slowly picks up a hoop and together we decide where it goes in the line, biggest to smallest (2 min).
- We look at the finished line and trace it with our eyes and finger: "Big, smaller, even smaller" (1 min).
- Each child sits inside a hoop and becomes the hoop's size: tall in the big one, curled up in the small one (2 min).
- We close our eyes inside our hoop and breathe three times, like the sleeping family (1 min).
Rules
- Walk slowly with the hoop, no running.
- Wait for your turn.
- We all help decide where it goes.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only three very different hoops: big, medium and small.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use four or five hoops.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, use hoops closer in size, and at the end line them up the other way, smallest to biggest.
Adaptations
- Child who uses a wheelchair: we bring the hoops to them and they choose the spot by pointing.
- Child with low vision: compares hoops by touching and hugging them.
- Autistic child: always gets to place the last hoop, knowing ahead of time when their turn is.
Learning goals
- Compare and order objects by size.
- Cooperate on a shared task.
- Calm down with slow movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- aros de distintos tamaños: 25
Teacher tip
No hoops in several sizes? Ropes tied into circles of different lengths work. Ask "which one is missing?" instead of correcting.
