The Fireflies Go Out One by One
Children are fireflies who turn their lights on and off with their hands as they breathe, drift slowly through the forest at night, and go out one by one until everything is calm. It builds movement control and relaxation.
How to play
- The teacher dims the lights and explains that at night in the forest fireflies light up to find each other; each child is a sleeping firefly, sitting with closed hands (1 min).
- We turn on our light: breathing in, we open our hands slowly; breathing out, we close them (1 min).
- The fireflies drift slowly through the forest flashing their lights; when they meet another one, they touch their glowing hands for a moment and keep flying (2 min).
- They land on a leaf: they sit, lie down, and the teacher turns off each firefly with a gentle tap on the hand (1 min).
- The whole forest is dark and quiet; we breathe slowly and the teacher turns the lights up little by little (1 min).
Rules
- We fly slowly and quietly.
- We touch hands gently.
- When we're turned off, we stay still.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, they stay seated flashing their lights and only fly for a moment with the teacher.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they fly on their own and greet other fireflies as they pass.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a light turns on only when the teacher calls that firefly's color, and the rest fly with closed hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a firefly in a wheelchair flies with the arms, and the others come over to touch lights with them.
- Autism: give a heads-up before dimming the lights, and replace the hand tap with saying the child's name if they prefer.
- Visual impairment: don't dim the lights too much, and the teacher narrates each change aloud.
Learning goals
- Control the speed and intensity of movement.
- Coordinate hand movement with breathing.
- Reach a calm state at the end of the session.
Teacher tip
Don't turn the lights fully off; lowering the blinds or leaving one lamp on is enough. The usual mistake is opening and closing hands too fast, so count "breathe in, one, two" to set the pace.
