The Clapping Tunnel
A rhythm game where the class forms a human tunnel with two lines, and whoever goes through has to match their steps to classmates' clapping. Students practice adjusting movement to a rhythm while building a positive group feel.
How to play
- Set up two facing lines about 1.5 m (5 ft) apart to form a tunnel (1 min).
- Practice three clapping rhythms with the whole class: slow, medium and fast (1 min).
- The first student in one line goes through the tunnel matching the rhythm: slow = walk, medium = brisk walk, fast = jog.
- At the end they join the line, and the next student starts once the previous one is halfway through (3 min).
- Change the rhythm each turn and finish with a round of softer and softer claps to calm down (1 min).
Rules
- Claps never touch the student going through.
- Steps must match the rhythm the group is clapping.
- Safety: only start once the classmate ahead has passed the middle of the tunnel.
Variations
Easier
Steady rhythm, always walking.
Standard
The rhythm changes every turn.
Harder
Rhythms include pauses where the student in the tunnel has to freeze.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wider tunnel and slower rhythms on their turn.
- Sound sensitivity or autism: pat thighs instead of clapping, and give a heads-up before each change.
- Shy students: they can go through the tunnel with a partner.
Learning goals
- Match movement to a rhythm.
- Keep a shared beat with the group.
- Build a positive group feel with gentle activation.
Teacher tip
Set the beat yourself at first with claps or a hand drum so the class doesn't speed up. With a big class, run two tunnels at once.

More warm-ups for Elementary
Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area. It develops spatial orientation, active listening and trust in a partner.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise. It's a fun warm-up that raises the heart rate and works reaction time and body control.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines. It warms up the whole body, builds strength and coordination, and lets young students be creative.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out. At each continent they do a quick themed exercise, warming up while practicing spatial orientation.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor. A calm warm-up that improves stability and body control while encouraging cooperative problem-solving.
Body Echo
The teacher makes a rhythm with claps, stomps, or body movements and the class repeats it like an echo, with patterns getting longer and faster. It focuses attention, warms up the body gently, and develops rhythm and listening skills.
