The Calm Tower
Sitting in a circle, each child gets up slowly, quietly places a block on a shared tower and goes back to their spot breathing deeply. Children practice calm, fine motor control and waiting their turn.
How to play
- Sit in a circle, each child holding a block, with the tower base in the middle (1 min).
- Breathe together: smell the flower (breathe in) and blow out the candle (breathe out), three times (1 min).
- The teacher taps a child's shoulder; they tiptoe to the middle, place their block very carefully and return to their spot; one after another (2 min).
- If the tower falls, everyone says “Oops!” with a smile, we start again and carry on with whoever is left (1 min).
- Look at the finished tower in silence and blow out one last big, gentle candle (1 min).
Rules
- Go to the middle only when the teacher taps your shoulder.
- Place your block slowly and quietly.
- If it falls, no problem: we start again.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use big blocks and let the tower grow sideways like a low wall.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, build upward, one at a time.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, go two at a time and place blocks at the same moment, coordinating without talking.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: bring the tower closer to the wheelchair or build it on a low table.
- Visual impairment: a buddy walks with them and guides their hand to the tower.
- Autism: tell them how many children go before their turn and respect it if they'd rather go last.
Learning goals
- Control fine movements calmly.
- Breathe deeply and slowly.
- Wait for a turn quietly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Plastic building blocks: 25
Teacher tip
Choose the order so no one waits too long: alternate sides of the circle. With a restless group, use big blocks and a low tower rather than one that keeps falling.
