The Bench Train Goes Station to Station
Each bench is a train: kids sit astride in a row, move their arms like wheels and lean together on the curves; at each station they get off and switch trains. It builds seated balance and moving in sync with classmates.
How to play
- Each bench is a train with its own color; we sit astride one behind the other, without holding on to anyone (1 min).
- The train starts with our made-up chant "Choo-choo, choo-choo, choo-choo-choo, hop on board, the train's for you," arms rolling like wheels (1 min).
- The teacher calls the curves, "Curve to the right!" "Curve to the left!", and the whole car leans together without falling off (2 min).
- When we hear "Station!" we get off, walk along the platform and climb onto a different bench (2 min).
- The train reaches the last stop: we brake, blow off steam and get off slowly (1 min).
Rules
- We only get off the train when the teacher says "Station!"
- On curves we lean just a little, without pulling the friend in front.
- On the platform we walk, we don't run.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, gentle forward and backward curves and an adult on each train.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, left and right curves and switching trains.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the train goes through a tunnel (duck down on the bench) and over a bridge (lift feet off the floor).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a child who can't sit astride is the station master next to the bench, calling the curves with their arms.
- Hearing impairment: show each curve with an arrow drawn on card stock too.
- Autism: always ride the same train and announce the last stop ahead of time.
Learning goals
- Keep seated balance while leaning the trunk.
- Move at the same time as classmates.
- Follow the signal to get on and off.
Equipment for a class of 25
- banco sueco: 4
- pandero: 1
Teacher tip
No more than five kids per bench. Practice the curves before adding the chant; if they let go of the bench, remind them their feet always touch the floor.
