The Bee That Hums Softly
Children are little bees flying home to the hive, humming with their mouths closed, "mmmm," longer and softer each time, feeling the buzz in their faces. It works on slow breathing and noticing their own body.
How to play
- Sit in a circle: this is the hive, and the bees are coming home tired from visiting flowers (1 min).
- Breathe in through the nose and hum with a closed mouth, "mmmm," until the air runs out; three times (1 min).
- Gently cover your ears with your hands and hum again, softer, to hear the buzz inside (1 min).
- The queen says it's bedtime: the hum gets softer and softer until it's silent and we rest our heads on our knees (1 min).
- The bee wakes up: open your eyes and flutter your wings slowly before standing up (1 min).
Rules
- I hum with my mouth closed.
- Each bee hums with its own air, no rushing.
- Hands cover my ears without pressing.
- At the end, the hive is silent.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, hum without covering ears while the teacher's hand flies like a bee to show how long to hum.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they put a finger on their nose or lips to feel where the hum buzzes and share at the end.
Adaptations
- Hearing loss: focus on feeling the vibration with a hand on the throat or chest.
- Autism: if covering ears feels odd, they hum with hands on their knees.
- Limited mobility: same activity, seated in their chair.
Learning goals
- Lengthen the out-breath.
- Feel the voice vibrate in the body.
- Move from noise to quiet.
Teacher tip
Make the first hum really long yourself so they copy it. If someone hums loudly, don't correct them out loud: cover your ears and soften your own hum, and the group will follow.
