The Animal Color Cards
Children move around the room and switch animals according to the color card the teacher holds up, without anyone saying a word. They practice recognizing colors by sight and warm up with different ways of moving.
How to play
- In a circle, the teacher shows each card and its animal: red crab, blue fish, green frog, yellow chick, and everyone tries them together (1 min).
- The teacher silently raises the red card and everyone walks sideways like crabs around the space (1 min).
- The teacher switches cards without talking every few seconds, and children change animals as soon as they see the new color (2 min).
- The teacher hides the card behind their back: everyone freezes like a statue until another color appears (1 min).
- We finish with yellow: little chicks walking slower and slower until they sit down (1 min).
Rules
- Eyes on the card, mouths quiet.
- Find your own path and don't bump into friends.
- No color means freeze.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only two colors (red and blue) and switch slowly.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use all four colors and the freeze game.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher shows two cards at once and children mix the animals (a fish that hops like a frog).
Adaptations
- Child who uses a wheelchair: each color has an arm gesture (pincers, fins, clap, wings) and they move at their own pace.
- Child with low vision: use large, high-contrast cards and a buddy who whispers the color.
- Autistic child: preview the four animals with picture cards on the wall before starting.
Learning goals
- Recognize four basic colors by sight.
- Respond with the body to a visual signal.
- Warm up with varied movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cartulinas de colores: 4
Teacher tip
Use cards at least letter-size and hold them up high. The classic mistake is saying the color out loud: once you say it, they stop looking.
