Stretchy Body Alphabet
Students shape letters with their bodies using held stretching positions, first on their own and then in small groups to spell short words. It stretches the major muscle groups in a playful way while building body awareness and cooperation.
How to play
- Spread students out so each one has room to reach arms and legs without touching anyone (30 sec).
- The teacher calls and demonstrates a letter: "I" (arms overhead, long full-body reach), "T" (arms out to the sides), "Y" (arms in a high V), "L" (sitting, legs straight, tall back).
- Hold each letter for 15 seconds with slow breathing; do about 6 letters, including a "C" lying on your side and a "V" sitting with legs apart (2 min).
- In groups of 4, the teacher calls a short word (SUN, SKY, JOY) and each group spells it on the floor by lying or sitting in stretch positions (2 min).
- Each group holds its word for 20 seconds while the others quietly read it; change words twice (3 min).
- Finish with everyone lying down in a long "I," reaching from fingertips to toes for three breaths (30 sec).
Rules
- Every stretch is done without bouncing or pain, only to a gentle pull.
- Don't step on or lean on classmates while forming words.
- Hold your position quietly while other groups read.
- Everyone in the group is part of each letter.
Variations
Easier
Only form individual letters with the teacher modeling, without group words.
Standard
Combine individual letters with three-letter words in groups of 4.
Harder
Groups choose a five-letter word and the rest of the class must guess it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student forms letters with arms and trunk from a wheelchair, and the group gives them an adapted letter.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows the letter written large on a card as well as demonstrating it.
- Flexibility level: more flexible students can try harder letters, like an "A" with legs apart and hands together on the floor.
Learning goals
- Stretch the major muscle groups with sustained holds.
- Become aware of posture and body parts.
- Work together in a small group to show a word.
Teacher tip
Watch the seated "L": many students round their backs, so allow slightly bent knees to keep the back straight. Have a list of words ready so you're not improvising.
