Stretch Buzz Counting Circle
In a circle, students count out loud taking turns, but on multiples of an agreed number they don't say the number: they do a silent stretch instead. It's a classic Buzz game that mixes mental math and attention with gentle stretches to help students cool down.
How to play
- Make 3 standing circles of 8-9 students, with room to reach out their arms (30 sec).
- Explain the key: count up from 1 in turn, and on multiples of 3 (3, 6, 9…) do an overhead arm stretch for 5 seconds instead of saying the number.
- If someone makes a mistake, the whole circle does a 10-second stretch with a deep breath and restarts from 1; nobody is out (2 min).
- Round two: add another rule; on numbers ending in 5, do a side bend instead of saying the number (2 min).
- Round three: each circle picks its own key number and stretch, then teaches it to another circle, which must play by those rules (2 min).
- Finish with everyone seated, counting down from 10 to 1 with one breath per number (30 sec).
Rules
- Turns always go clockwise.
- The stretch replaces the number and is done silently.
- Nobody is out; mistakes turn into a stretch for the whole circle.
- Stretches are gentle, with no bouncing.
Variations
Easier
Use the number 2 (even numbers) and count only to 20.
Standard
Play with multiples of 3, then add numbers ending in 5.
Harder
Play with multiples of 4 and 7 at the same time, each with a different stretch.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: choose arm, gentle neck and trunk stretches so they can be done seated.
- Math difficulties: the student can hold a number strip with the key numbers highlighted.
- Shy students: they may show their number on their fingers instead of saying it out loud.
Learning goals
- Stay attentive and do mental math while playing with a group.
- Perform gentle stretches that support recovery.
- Accept your own and others' mistakes with good humor.
Teacher tip
Choose the key number by age: 2 or 5 for younger students, 3 or 4 for older ones. If a circle speeds up, have students say each number on an exhale.
