Stick Drop Switch
In pairs or small circles, each student holds a pole upright with one end on the floor and, on the signal, lets go and runs to catch a partner's pole before it falls. It develops reaction time, attention and coordination.
How to play
- Make pairs facing each other 3 feet apart; each student holds a pole upright with the tip on the floor and one hand on top (1 min).
- On the call "Switch!" both let go of their pole and catch their partner's before it hits the floor (2 min).
- Each time both succeed, they step half a step farther apart; if a pole falls, they move half a step closer.
- Change the start position: back to the pole, seated, or after a clap, to work different reactions (2 min).
- Form circles of 5, each with a pole: on the signal, everyone moves one spot to the right at the same time (3 min).
- Final challenge: how many switches in a row can the circle make without dropping a pole? (1 min).
Rules
- Release the pole straight up, without pushing it toward your partner.
- Catch the pole near the top, never at the bottom tip.
- Keep a 6-foot open circle around each group.
- If a pole falls, pick it up, set it and start again.
Variations
Easier
Start 18 inches apart with a three-count before the switch.
Standard
Pairs at 3 feet and circles of five with a single signal.
Harder
Use trick calls: switch only on "Switch!", not on similar-sounding words.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated at a short distance, or be the leader who gives the signals.
- Hearing impairment: use a visual signal, such as dropping an arm or showing a pinnie.
- Fitness level: adjust each pair's distance so they succeed about half the time.
Learning goals
- Improve reaction time to simple signals.
- Coordinate letting go, moving and catching in an instant.
- Cooperate with the group to reach a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- poles: 25
Teacher tip
Use lightweight plastic poles, not wooden dowels. The most common mistake is pushing the pole when releasing it: tell students to simply open their hand.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
