Stage Warm-Up: Walk, Stop and Fill the Space
A classic theater warm-up in which the group walks around the room trying to keep the space balanced and responds to tempo and group stop cues that nobody says out loud. It gets the body moving and trains group listening before improvising.
How to play
- The whole group walks around the space looking for empty gaps, as if the room were a tray that must not tip over (2 min).
- The teacher calls speeds from 1 to 5; students adjust their pace, stride length and breathing to each number (2 min).
- Group stop with no signal: everyone has to stop and start again at the same time without talking, only by watching and sensing the others (2 min).
- When they stop, each student takes a pose at a different level (high, middle, low) and holds it for three seconds before moving on (2 min).
Rules
- Walk without touching anyone and without talking.
- Nobody leads the stop: if someone jumps the gun, the group tries again.
- For the low level, bend your knees to go down; never drop to the floor.
Variations
Easier
The teacher claps to stop and start during the first rounds.
Standard
Group stops and starts with no signal, with a level change at each stop.
Harder
Add the rule that only half the group can be still at any one time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: moves in a wheelchair and shows the level with the arms and torso.
- Hearing impairment: speed numbers are shown with raised fingers.
- Autism: gets a heads-up before each new cue and may walk along the edge of the space.
Learning goals
- Warm up the whole body before an expressive movement session.
- Build group listening and synchronization without words.
- Become aware of how space and levels are used.
Teacher tip
If the group stop works on the first try, celebrate it and ask for the next one to be slower. It works just as well in a cleared classroom as outdoors.
