Sponging Away the Hopscotch
At the end of the session, children slowly wipe away the chalk hopscotch grids and circuits with wet sponges, tracing each line with unhurried strokes. The calm, repeated motion relaxes the body while kids care for the playground for the next day.
How to play
- Sit next to the chalk drawings; the teacher hands each child a sponge and puts the buckets in the middle (1 min).
- Dip the sponge, squeeze it hard and let go slowly, feeling the cool water (1 min).
- On your knees, trace a line with the sponge very slowly, like a snail (1 min).
- Wipe away a square with slow circles, first with one hand, then the other (1 min).
- Sit back, look at the wet ground and breathe while the sun or the breeze dries it (1 min).
- Squeeze the sponges out into the bucket, put them away in the box and wash hands (1 min).
Rules
- Your sponge moves slowly, like a snail.
- Water stays on the ground; no splashing anyone.
- Each person wipes their own patch without stepping on a friend's.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, wipe one big patch with the teacher nearby, using sponges that are already wet and no buckets.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, dip and squeeze on their own and trace the lines.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, work in pairs: one traces the line and the other follows, wiping what's left.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: tie a sponge to a long stick to wipe from the wheelchair.
- Autism: a child who dislikes the wet feeling can wear a glove or use a small broom.
- Visual impairment: a buddy guides the child's hand along the line the first time; after that, they follow the wet trail.
Learning goals
- Lower arousal with slow, repeated movements.
- Enjoy the feel of cool water.
- Take care of the shared play space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Sponges: 25
- Buckets of water: 4
Teacher tip
Leave one circuit untouched if kids want it for recess, and only wipe what's done its job. Keep the water shallow (an inch or so) to avoid puddles.
