Spanish Squat with a Band at the Wall Bars
An isometric and slow squat with a heavy band anchored to the wall bars and looped behind the knees, which lets students keep their shins vertical. It prepares the patellar tendon and quads before jumping and running.
How to play
- Knee and ankle mobility for 1.5 minutes: circles, bending and straightening, and easy lunges.
- Setup (1 minute): in pairs, loop the band around a low rung of the wall bars and behind both knees; step back until it is tight.
- First set (1 minute): sit back with vertical shins and a tall torso to about 60 degrees and hold 20 seconds; the partner checks posture.
- Sets 2 and 3 (2.5 minutes): 30-second holds down to about 90 degrees if pain-free, with 30 seconds of rest while switching roles.
- Slow reps (1.5 minutes): 8 lowers and rises inside the band, 3 seconds down and 1 second up.
- Transfer (30 seconds): 3 easy vertical jumps with controlled landings.
Rules
- Before starting, check that the band anchor is secure.
- Safety: never let the band snap; step out of it by walking toward the wall bars.
- If the front of the knee hurts, go less deep.
Variations
Easier
Wall sit without a band, back against the wall, only to 60 degrees.
Standard
Three 20–30 second holds and 8 slow reps inside the band.
Harder
Forty-five-second holds at 90 degrees while hugging a medicine ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated isometric knee extensions against a band held by a partner.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: an agreed visual cue starts and ends each set.
- Lower fitness level: a single 20-second hold and less depth.
Learning goals
- Prepare the patellar tendon with a controlled isometric load.
- Hold a squat with vertical shins and a tall torso.
- Add the exercise to a personal injury-prevention plan.
Equipment for a class of 25
- resistance bands: 13
- wall bar sections: 7
Teacher tip
Use only heavy bands and check each rung; a three-foot section of wall bars fits two students. It is very helpful for students with knee pain in jumping sports.
