Sock Hunt on Your Knees: Grip and Control Without Roughness
A classic wrestling warm-up game: on their knees, everyone tucks a sock into their waistband and tries to steal the opponent's. It raises the heart rate and teaches control without yanking.

How to play
- Briefing and stop agreement: everyone tucks a sock at the hip with half of it hanging out; review the double tap on the floor as the stop signal (1 min).
- Kneeling pair rounds: 30 s to take the other's sock, always keeping at least one knee down; 15 s rest and switch partners (4 min).
- Control-rule round: you can only take the sock after holding your partner with both hands for two seconds (3 min).
- Free-for-all in two zones: anyone who loses their sock leaves, does five shrimps on the edge and comes back with a new one (2 min).
Rules
- Always kneeling: nobody stands up on the mat.
- No grabbing neck, face, hair or fingers; grip wrists, arms and trunk.
- A double tap on the floor or on your partner means stop immediately.
- No yanking and no diving at people.
Variations
Easier
20 s rounds where the partner only defends with hands and doesn't move.
Standard
30 s pair rounds, then switch opponents.
Harder
Two socks each (one on each side) and the winner of each round moves up a zone.
Adaptations
- Knee injury: play seated cross-legged on a thick mat against someone in the same position.
- Uneasy with contact: start with a trusted partner and hands-only rules, no trunk grip.
- Visual impairment: start with hands on the opponent's shoulders so you always know where they are.
Learning goals
- Raise heart rate in a wrestling-specific way.
- Practice control grips without roughness.
- Respect the stop signal as the basic rule of combat.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 16
- old socks: 30
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Odd socks from home work perfectly; ask each student to bring one. The usual problem is students standing up to gain an edge, so stop the game the first time it happens.
