Slow Walk on the Moon
Children are astronauts strolling on the Moon, where everything happens in slow motion: slow, long steps, floating arms and deep breaths. It works on very slow, controlled walking to wind down.
How to play
- We put on our pretend space suits and helmets and count down to land: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (1 min).
- With soft music, we take slow, long steps across the Moon, as if we weighed almost nothing (2 min).
- We pick up pretend moon rocks, crouching down very slowly, and put them in our backpacks (1 min).
- We plant our flag, stand still and take deep breaths, looking at Earth far away (1 min).
- We walk back to the spaceship backward, very slowly, and lie down in our seats (1 min).
Rules
- On the Moon, everything is super slow.
- Our feet barely make a sound.
- Every astronaut has their own space.
- Breathe slowly inside your helmet.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher walks in front and they copy.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they alternate slow steps with stops on the teacher's signal.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they invent a slow astronaut move for the others to copy.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: they do the slow movements with arms and upper body from their wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: a classmate guides them by the hand and describes what they see on the Moon.
- Autism: they can take their walk in a small space of their own, with less going on around them.
Learning goals
- Move in slow motion with control.
- Lower their intensity and catch their breath.
- Show an imagined movement with their bodies.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft music
Teacher tip
The slower you move, the slower they will. Soft music without lyrics really helps keep the pace.
