Slow-Motion Simon Says
A calm version of the classic Simon Says: students follow only commands that start with "Simon says," and every move is a slow-motion stretch or breath. Nobody is ever out. It works on listening, self-control and cooling down.
How to play
- Spread students out standing and facing the teacher, with room to stretch their arms (30 sec).
- Explain the rule: only do the move if the command starts with "Simon says"; otherwise freeze like a statue.
- The teacher gives slow commands: "Simon says raise your arms super slowly," "Simon says touch your knees," "Simon says breathe in like a balloon" (2 min).
- Mix in trick commands without "Simon says"; anyone who moves isn't out but takes one extra deep breath and keeps playing.
- After 2 minutes, the teacher picks 3 students to take turns as Simon, one minute each (3 min).
- End with "Simon says sit down very slowly and close your eyes," followed by three silent breaths (1 min).
Rules
- All moves are slow, with no jumping or running.
- Nobody is out; a mistake just earns one extra breath.
- Students playing Simon only call safe, gentle moves.
- Listen quietly so everyone can hear the commands.
Variations
Easier
Give trick commands with an obvious gesture so they're easy to catch.
Standard
Mix commands with and without "Simon says" at a calm pace.
Harder
Simon does a different gesture than the one spoken, and students must follow only the words.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: offer arm and trunk options for every command so they can be done seated.
- Hearing impairment: pair "Simon says" with a visual cue, such as raising an open palm.
- Shy students: they can play Simon with a partner.
Learning goals
- Improve listening and response to instructions.
- Control impulses and stay still when required.
- Perform stretches and breathing that bring the heart rate down.
Teacher tip
Gradually lower your voice during the game and students will copy you. Keep a list of slow commands handy so you don't fall back on explosive moves.
