Slow-Motion Ribbons
Holding a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon, students draw large, very slow shapes in the air in time with their breathing and calm music. It builds coordination and creative movement while gradually bringing energy levels down.
How to play
- Give each student a ribbon and space them at least 10 ft apart facing you; play slow music (1 min).
- Rainbow: raise the ribbon on one side while breathing in and lower it on the other side while breathing out, drawing a big arc; 6 times (90 sec).
- Ocean waves: with arm extended, move the ribbon up and down like gentle waves while taking slow steps forward and back (90 sec).
- In pairs facing each other 10 ft apart, one leads and the other mirrors; switch after 45 seconds (90 sec).
- The whole class in a circle makes a ribbon wave: each student lifts and lowers their ribbon right after the classmate on their left (1 min).
- Ending: draw a circle that gets smaller and slower until the ribbon rests on the floor; sit next to it and take three breaths (90 sec).
Rules
- Always keep a safe distance so ribbons don't tangle or hit anyone.
- Move the ribbon slowly, never like a whip.
- Don't step on your ribbon or anyone else's.
- At the end, wind your ribbon around the stick before returning it.
Variations
Easier
Use scarves or short ribbons and arm movements only, without traveling.
Standard
Rainbow, waves, partner mirror, and circle wave with slow music.
Harder
Use two ribbons, one in each hand, moving them in different directions at the same time while staying slow.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does every movement seated, with extra space around them for the ribbon.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast ribbons and describe each shape in simple words, like "big arc."
- Coordination level: students who struggle can use a scarf, which is easier to control than a long ribbon.
Learning goals
- Coordinate arm movement with breathing.
- Express smooth, slow movements with the body.
- Lower energy levels through gentle movement and music.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Hand out ribbons already wound up and collect them the same way so you don't waste time untangling. On a windy day, move it into the gym.
