Slow-Motion Hoop Pass Circle
Standing in a circle holding hands, students pass a hoop over each classmate's body without letting go, moving very slowly and stretching to make it work. It combines full-body stretching with cooperation and patience, and leaves the group connected and calm at the end of class.
How to play
- Make 3 standing circles of 8-9 students holding hands; the teacher hangs one hoop between the hands of two students in each circle (1 min).
- Without letting go, the hoop must travel around the circle over each person's body: head goes through, one arm goes up, the trunk bends and a leg lifts.
- First lap very slowly to figure out how to stretch through it; neighbors can help by lowering or raising their hands without letting go (2 min).
- Second lap in total silence, communicating only with eye contact and gestures (2 min).
- Third lap with two hoops at once, one in each direction, crossing at one student; then the circle slowly sits down still holding hands and takes three breaths (2 min).
Rules
- Never let go of hands.
- Pass the hoop slowly without yanking anyone's arms.
- Help classmates without pushing or rushing them.
- If someone loses balance, the circle pauses until they're steady.
Variations
Easier
Use large hoops and allow letting go with one hand to step a leg through.
Standard
Pass a medium hoop without letting go, then do a silent lap.
Harder
Use small hoops or two hoops moving in opposite directions that must cross.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the hoop passes over the head and arms of a student in a wheelchair, and neighbors lower it to the floor to continue.
- Touch aversion or autism: instead of holding hands, the student and their neighbors hold a scarf together.
- Low flexibility: give that circle larger hoops.
Learning goals
- Perform full-body stretches in a playful way.
- Cooperate and help classmates to reach a shared goal.
- Stay calm and patient during a group challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 6
Teacher tip
Choose hoops big enough for bodies to pass through easily, and keep a larger spare handy. Praise teamwork more than speed so it doesn't turn into a race.
