How to play
- Standing, we're at the top of the mountain, looking down at the valley with a hand over our eyes (1 min).
- We hike down in slow motion: one very slow step, then another, knees bent (1 min).
- Here comes a slope: we lower ourselves little by little into a squat (1 min).
- We breathe like a gentle mountain breeze: in through the nose, slowly out (1 min).
- We reach the valley: sit cross-legged and close our eyes for a moment (1 min).
Rules
- Slower than a snail.
- No noisy feet.
- I stop when the teacher says "Valley!".
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher goes down beside them and tells it as a story.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the game as is.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, walk down on tiptoes and hold the squat for a count of five.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hikes down with arms and upper body from the chair, leaning slowly.
- Visual impairment: the teacher describes the landscape and slope in detail.
- Autism: can do it holding the adult's hand or looking at a picture of the mountain.
Learning goals
- Control slow movement.
- Bring heart rate and breathing down.
- Act out a pretend hike down with the body.
Teacher tip
Your voice is the tool: lower and slower each time. Works great right after climbing games so they leave the room calm.
