Sip by Sip at the Quiet Fountain
After moving, children walk slowly like calm rivers to their water bottles, take small sips and notice how the water cools the body. It builds the habit of drinking water after activity and helps everyone settle down.
How to play
- Sitting in a circle, the teacher asks who has a dry mouth or feels hot after playing and explains that the body is asking for water (1 min).
- Become calm rivers: walk slowly around the space moving the arms like gentle waves (1 min).
- Each river reaches its own bottle, sits down and takes three small sips, counting “one, two, three” (1 min).
- With eyes closed, feel the cool water going down the throat to the tummy (1 min).
- Second round of sips for anyone still thirsty, then close the bottle and put it back in its place (1 min).
- Finish with a fountain breath: raise the arms breathing in and lower them breathing out like falling water (1 min).
Rules
- Everyone drinks from their own bottle, never someone else’s.
- Small sips, no rushing.
- Close the bottle and put it back.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher walks each child to their bottle and helps open it if needed.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, each child finds their bottle by name or picture and opens it on their own.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, before drinking they say whether they are very thirsty, a little or not at all, and decide how many sips to take.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: an adult brings the bottle over and the child makes waves with the arms from their spot.
- Autism: keep the bottle in the same spot, marked with the child’s photo, and preview that after play comes a drink.
- Visual impairment: put a rubber band or raised sticker on the bottle so the child can find it by touch.
Learning goals
- Build the habit of drinking water after moving.
- Listen to the body’s feeling of thirst.
- Calm down with slow steps and breathing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Water bottles: 25
Teacher tip
Set out bottles labeled with names or photos before class, in a shady spot. Usual mistake: gulping it all at once; teach them to count their sips.
