Single-File Rotating Leader: Lead, Then Hand Off
Groups of five move in single file while the person at the front sets a movement or exercise that everyone copies; at the signal, they go to the back and the next person leads. It's a complete warm-up that has every student lead, choose suitable exercises and hand off control.
How to play
- Form groups of five in single file inside an area marked with cones and explain the activity (1 min).
- Free jog: the leader sets the direction, pace and type of movement; at each teacher clap, every 30 seconds, they move to the back (3 min).
- The teacher shows a card naming a body area, such as ankles, hips or shoulders, and the leader must lead a dynamic mobility exercise for it (3 min).
- Activation phase: each leader sets a more intense exercise for 30 seconds, such as high knees, jumps or short sprints, and afterward the group gives a thumbs-up if it fit (3 min).
Rules
- The leader picks exercises everyone in the group can do safely.
- Keep two steps of space in line so no one steps on the person ahead.
- Lines don't cross; if two groups get close, the leader changes direction.
Variations
Easier
The leader picks from a list of exercises taped to a central cone.
Standard
A new leader every 30 seconds through jogging, targeted mobility and activation phases.
Harder
The leader must link two different exercises and explain in one sentence what each one is for.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group moves at the student's pace, and when leading, the student sets upper-body exercises for all to copy.
- Visual impairment: the student goes second with a hand on the leader's shoulder, and the leader describes each exercise aloud.
- Autism: the student has the exercise list in writing for their turn to lead.
Learning goals
- Carry out a complete, progressive warm-up independently.
- Lead the group briefly and then hand off leadership.
- Choose suitable exercises for each body area.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Circulate among the groups and correct the form of the exercises being led. If a leader keeps repeating the same move, show them the body-area card to widen their repertoire.
