Silent Feet: A No-Noise Warm-Up Traverse
A low wall-bar warm-up where the challenge is to place your feet without making a sound. It gets the body going and builds the habit of looking at your foot and placing it precisely from minute one.

How to play
- Mobility for ankles, wrists, shoulders and hips in a circle next to the wall bars (2 min).
- Free traverse with feet less than a hand-width off the floor; your partner listens and raises a hand every time they hear a foot bang (3 min).
- Second pass with the cue "look, place, weight": keep your eyes on the rung until the foot is set (3 min).
- Final pass a bit faster while staying silent; the observer gives a 1-3 score and you switch roles (2 min).
Rules
- Feet stay below 50 cm off the floor during the warm-up.
- One climber per two sections of wall bars.
- Climb down or step off; never jump off backward.
- Mats pushed together with no gaps under the traverse.
Variations
Easier
Traverse stepping on every other rung, hands anywhere.
Standard
Silent feet on every rung with the observer counting bangs.
Harder
Toes only, and every bang sends you back to the start.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: the partner taps the target rung by hand before each step.
- Ankle or knee injury: be the observer and log bangs for two classmates.
- Fear of height: stay on the lowest rung with a partner's hand on your back.
Learning goals
- Warm up ankles, wrists and shoulders before climbing.
- Watch the foot all the way onto the hold.
- Give short, specific feedback to a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 10
- gym mats: 8
Teacher tip
If the gym echoes, ask the whole class for silence during the passes: foot noise is your only data. The classic mistake is looking at the next handhold while the foot is still searching for the rung.
