Silent Eye-Contact Seat Swap
In a seated circle, two students silently agree to swap seats using only eye contact and walk slowly to each other's spot, while the student in the middle tries to grab an open spot. It builds attention, nonverbal communication and self-control in a quiet setting.
How to play
- Make 2 circles of 12-13 students, each sitting on a flat disc cone that marks their spot; one student stands in the middle with no cone (1 min).
- Two students in the circle make eye contact and, with a small nod, agree to swap; they stand up and walk slowly to each other's cone.
- The student in the middle watches for these glances and tries to walk to an open cone before its owner gets there.
- If successful, the student left without a cone goes to the middle; if not, the middle student keeps watching. No running, ever (4 min).
- Final round: the teacher has the whole circle swap at once, two by two in slow motion, and everyone ends seated, breathing (2 min).
Rules
- No talking or hand signals: eye contact only.
- Always walk, never run.
- You can't swap with the classmates sitting right next to you.
- If two students reach a cone at the same time, the one already seated keeps it.
Variations
Easier
Allow a small hand gesture along with eye contact.
Standard
Swaps are agreed on by eye contact only, and the middle student tries to steal an open spot.
Harder
Make three-way chain swaps using eye contact without the middle player noticing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair stays in place and acts as a "lookout" who tips off the middle player with a code word.
- Autism or difficulty with eye contact: allow a foot gesture or a tap on the cone as the signal.
- Visual impairment: the student plays with a buddy who guides them by the arm.
Learning goals
- Develop attention and the ability to read others' signals.
- Communicate without words through eye contact and gestures.
- Control impulses by keeping a slow pace of movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flat disc cones: 26
Teacher tip
Explain that being in the middle isn't bad; it's the best spot for watching. If anyone runs, repeat the round in slow motion for everyone.
