Silent Ball Circle
Sitting in a circle, students pass a foam ball in complete silence; anyone who talks, makes a bad toss, or drops an easy catch sits in the middle until the next round. It builds passing accuracy, focus, and calm behavior.
How to play
- Seat the class in a circle about 20 ft across, legs crossed and about 3 ft apart (1 min).
- Explain the signals: make eye contact to show who you're passing to, never talk, and toss gently underhand.
- Start the game by tossing the ball to a student, who then tosses it to someone else, and so on, in 2-minute rounds.
- Anyone who talks, makes an uncatchable toss, or drops an easy one moves inside the circle and keeps following the game with their eyes.
- A student in the middle gets back into the circle by catching a pass that goes over them, or when the round ends (2-3 rounds).
- In the last minute, the ball may only be rolled along the floor, slower and slower, until it comes back to you.
Rules
- Total silence: any word, loud laugh, or noise counts as an out.
- Tosses are underhand and chest high, never at someone's face.
- You can't pass back to the person who just passed to you.
- Nobody leaves their spot to chase the ball, to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Use a bigger ball and don't count dropped catches as outs.
Standard
One foam ball, underhand tosses, and outs for talking, bad tosses, or drops.
Harder
Add a second ball at the same time, or require catching with the non-dominant hand only.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays from a wheelchair in the circle and passes to them are rolled or bounced.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with bells and let the passer quietly say the receiver's name.
- Skill level: less experienced students receive shorter passes and only talking counts as an out for them.
Learning goals
- Make accurate, soft tosses that fit the receiver.
- Stay focused and communicate without words.
- Calm down by following a shared silence rule.

Teacher tip
Don't let the middle fill up: if more than four students are inside, start a new round. The final minute of rolling the ball is what really closes the lesson.
