Shoes in a Row, Wake Up the Room
Children do the entry ritual for the movement room: shoes off and lined up, a seat on the bench to remember the rules, then a run to wake up the room by touching its walls. It builds a safe, predictable bridge from the classroom to play and gently warms up the body.
How to play
- At the door, everyone takes off their shoes and lines them up by the bench like a shoe train (1 min).
- We sit on the bench and the teacher names who came today; each child raises a hand to answer (1 min).
- The teacher holds up three fingers for the rules: “I don't hurt myself, I don't hurt others, I don't break what someone else made” (1 min).
- On the drum beat, we wake up the room: touch all four walls, the floor and the mats, then come back to the bench (2 min).
- We take a deep breath sitting down and the teacher says, “The room is awake. Let's play!” (1 min).
Rules
- Shoes stay asleep in their row until the end.
- We listen to the rules sitting on the bench.
- We wake up the room by touching things, not pushing friends.
- When the drum stops, we go back to the bench.
Variations
Easier
With 3-year-olds, the teacher leads the way touching the walls and children follow.
Standard
With 4-year-olds, each child touches the walls in any order and returns to the bench alone.
Harder
With 5-year-olds, one child says the rules out loud and the others show them with gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child wakes up the room from their chair by touching what's nearby, and the bench is placed close to a wall.
- Autism: always use the same ritual order with picture cards posted by the bench.
- Hearing loss: the rules are shown with three fixed gestures and a raised scarf replaces the drum.
Learning goals
- Internalize an entry ritual that separates the classroom from the play space.
- Remember the three basic room rules.
- Warm up the body by moving through the whole space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Benches: 2
- Hand drum
Teacher tip
Repeat the exact same ritual every session; predictability is what makes free play possible later. A common mistake is a long bench talk, so keep it to three sentences.
