Shared Jump Rope: One Turns, Both Jump
In pairs with a single rope, one turns and both jump at the same time, first one in front of the other and then side by side. It requires matching the partner's rhythm, communicating and timing the entry and exit without stopping the rope.
How to play
- Light bounces in place, ankle and wrist mobility and free individual rope jumping (2 min).
- Pairs with one rope: the turner jumps and the partner stands in front, facing them; they jump together 10 times in a row (2 min).
- Running entry: the partner waits outside, enters as the rope passes overhead, jumps 5 times and exits without stopping the rope (2 min).
- Side by side: each holds one end of the rope with the outside hand and they jump together; challenge of 20 jumps in a row (2 min).
Rules
- Ropes are only for jumping: no throwing them or swinging them overhead at others.
- Pairs stay at least 10 feet apart so ropes don't cross.
- Jump on the balls of the feet with slightly bent knees.
- The turner calls the rhythm out loud during the entry.
Variations
Easier
Jump with an extra bounce at a slow rhythm.
Standard
Joint front-back jumping, running entry and side-by-side jumping.
Harder
In the side-by-side jump, travel 10 m jumping without stopping.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: turns the rope while seated next to a jumping partner, and they count together.
- Overweight: alternates sets of 10 jumps with 20 seconds of walking recovery.
- Hearing impairment: the partner signals the rhythm with a tap on the shoulder before entering.
Learning goals
- Coordinate jumping with another person's rhythm.
- Activate ankles and calves with low jumps.
- Communicate to synchronize actions in pairs.
Equipment for a class of 25
- jump ropes: 15
Teacher tip
Ropes of 9 to 10 feet work well for two; with shorter ropes the front-back jump does not work.
