Scarf Dance to the Music
Holding a scarf, students move around the space drawing shapes in the air that match the character of the music: soft and slow, fast and cheerful, or strong and punchy. It builds creative movement, wide arm and trunk motion and a gentle warm-up.
How to play
- Give each student a scarf and spread them out with room to swing their arms (30 s).
- Slow music: draw waves, big circles and figure eights with the scarf while walking slowly (2 min).
- Fast music: shake the scarf like flickering fire, spin and jog with quick, short steps (90 s).
- Music with strong beats: snap the scarf gently into the air on every beat and jump in place (1 min).
- In pairs: one student makes a scarf movement and the other mirrors it; switch with each song (2 min).
- Finish: drop the scarf from up high and sink slowly down with it until seated (1 min).
Rules
- Never throw the scarf at others or swat anyone with it.
- Move in your own space and look around before you spin.
- When the music stops, the scarf goes still and you listen.
- Every idea counts: no one laughs at how someone else dances.
Variations
Easier
The teacher always leads the movement and the class copies it.
Standard
Three types of music plus a partner mirror finish.
Harder
Use a scarf in each hand and move each one differently.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it seated, moving the arms and trunk with the same expressiveness.
- Visual impairment: use bold-colored scarves and work near a partner who describes the changes.
- Shyness or autism: start by copying the teacher and leave free movement for the end without forcing anyone to improvise.
Learning goals
- Express the character of different music through movement.
- Move the shoulders, arms and trunk through a full range of motion.
- Create and copy movements with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25

- music: 1
Teacher tip
Prepare three very different music clips so the contrast is obvious. If the class feels self-conscious, dim the gym lights a bit: they usually loosen up.

A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
