Scarf Chain Knot Relay
In teams of five, each runner sprints 10 yards, ties a scarf onto the end of the team's chain with a knot, and runs back; the longest chain whose knots hold wins. Students work on running starts, fine motor skills, and teamwork.
How to play
- Make teams of 5 in lines behind a starting line, with 2 scarves per student; 10 yards in front of each team, a cone marks where the chain is built (1 min).
- Teach a simple knot: cross the ends of two scarves, tuck one under the other, and pull both ends tight, leaving long tails (1 min).
- On the signal, the first runner goes to the cone and drops a scarf; the second ties a scarf onto it, and so on; each runner returns to high-five the next until both scarves are used (3 min).
- The whole team goes to the cone, lifts the chain, and tests it with a gentle pull between two students: if a knot comes undone, that section does not count (1 min).
- Second round: untie the chain relay-style, one knot per runner, until every scarf is free (2 min).
- Final round: the team reties the chain together and jogs in a line holding it with one hand to the line and back without letting go (2 min).
Rules
- Each runner ties or unties only one knot per turn.
- Run in your own lane and come back along the side.
- Never tie scarves around anyone's body, wrist, or neck.
- The longest chain wins, as long as every knot passes the test.
Variations
Easier
Tie each scarf around the cone instead of to another scarf.
Standard
Join scarves with simple knots relay-style, then untie them.
Harder
Tie a double knot, or tie it with a partner using one hand each.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: move the cone to 5 yards or take the role of inspector who tests each knot.
- Autism: post a picture of the knot by the cone and keep a fixed running order.
- Fitness level: add a different movement on each leg of the relay (jumps, slides, skips) for students who want more intensity.
Learning goals
- Tie simple knots quickly and securely.
- Combine running and fine motor skills in a relay.
- Work together toward a team goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Scarves: 50
- Cones: 5
Teacher tip
Knots in thin scarves cinch tight, so teach students to leave long tails to make untying easier. Watch that no one ties a scarf to their wrist or neck while running.
