Saying Hello to Every Corner of the Room
The whole group follows the teacher around the movement room and says hello to each corner: the window, the mats, the door, the mirror. Children get to know a new space calmly and start to feel safe in it.
How to play
- Sitting by the door, the teacher explains that the room has corners that want to meet us (1 min).
- Walk slowly in a line behind the teacher to the first corner and wave to it: "Hello, window!" (1 min).
- Move on to the next corner with a different walk each time: on tiptoes, stomping, super slow (2 min).
- When the drum sounds, everyone goes to their favorite corner and touches it with both hands (1 min).
- Everyone comes back to the door spot and says together: "Hello, room!" (1 min).
Rules
- We walk behind the teacher, no passing.
- We say hello with gentle touches, no banging.
- When the drum sounds, we find our corner and come back to the group.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, visit only two or three corners in the first days, and the teacher holds hands with anyone who needs it.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, visit every corner and let a child pick how we walk to the next one.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher names a corner and children go say hello on their own before coming back to the door.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the route runs through the middle of the room, never over mats, and the child waves from the wheelchair.
- Autism: keep the route and order the same every time, with a photo of each corner the child holds.
- Visual impairment: the child touches each corner while we describe it (soft, cold, smooth) before moving on.
Learning goals
- Get to know the areas of the movement room.
- Move calmly while following an adult.
- Feel safe in a new place.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Repeat this greeting at the start of every session in the first weeks: what's familiar is calming. Don't make anyone touch a corner; looking at it from the line is enough.
