Sailboats and the Wind
Each child is a little sailboat with a scarf as the sail, and the teacher is the wind: a soft breeze means sail slowly, a storm means sail fast, and calm means stop. It builds speed control, listening and moving through space without bumping.
How to play
- Beforehand, put four cones in the corners of the playground as harbors. Each child takes a scarf and holds it up with both hands: that's the sail.
- Explain by doing: the teacher blows a soft "whooo" and walks slowly with a sail. Say: "I'm the wind. Listen to how I blow."
- Soft breeze: everyone sails slowly around the sea for one minute. Calm: the teacher goes quiet and boats freeze.
- Storm: the teacher blows hard and waves both arms; boats sail fast in zigzags without bumping. Thirty seconds, then back to a breeze.
- Cue "To the harbor!": every boat goes to the cone the teacher points to and ties up the sail, crouching. Repeat with another harbor.
- Last minutes: one child plays the wind and the others sail to match. Switch twice.
Rules
- Boats don't crash: look where you're going.
- Keep the sail away from your eyes.
- In the storm, go fast but never push.
- Everyone fits in the harbor: make room.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just a soft breeze and calm, with the teacher blowing very clearly.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add the storm and the harbors.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the wind changes direction and everyone sails where it points.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: sail while seated, moving the sail with the arms to match the wind.
- Hearing loss: show the wind with your arms (gentle, strong, still).
- More skilled kids hold the sail in one hand; less skilled kids sail without a scarf, using just their arms.
Learning goals
- Match travel speed to a sound signal.
- Move through space without bumping.
- Imitate a sailboat with the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 20
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Exaggerate the difference between soft and strong blowing: little ones need to hear it and see it. Hand out scarves before you start to save time.
