Safe Falls and Balance Breaking on the Mat
A warm-up before a wrestling or martial arts lesson: neck and spine mobility, backward and side falls with a slap to absorb the impact, and partner balance-breaking games. It teaches students how to fall without getting hurt, a skill useful in any sport and in daily life.
How to play
- Students barefoot, spread across the mats in pairs of similar weight. Minutes 0-2: neck mobility (no full circles), shoulders and hips, plus different crawls.
- Minutes 2-5: backward fall progression from sitting, squatting, and standing; round the back, tuck the chin, and slap the mat with both arms at 45 degrees. 5 of each.
- Minutes 5-8: side falls to each side from a squat and from standing, slapping with the arm on the falling side. 5 per side.
- Minutes 8-11: balance-breaking game: holding sleeves or forearms, each partner tries to make the other move a foot by gently pushing and pulling; 30-second rounds, switching partners.
- Minute 11-12: each pair does one assisted side fall, with one partner gently guiding the other to the mat.
Rules
- Keep the chin tucked on every fall to protect the head.
- No sweeps or throws in the balance games: only push and pull.
- On the whistle or a tap from your partner, let go immediately.
- Keep at least 6 feet between pairs.
Variations
Easier
Fall only from sitting and squatting.
Standard
Falls from all three heights and balance games with a forearm grip.
Harder
Add a forward shoulder roll and balance games standing on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice the slap and head protection from a seated position, and play seated balance games facing a partner.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: do the balance games holding a dowel together instead of gripping each other.
- Low fitness: fewer reps and falls only from a squat.
Learning goals
- Perform backward and side falls while protecting the head.
- Control force when pushing and pulling a partner.
- Prepare the body for contact in combat sports.

Teacher tip
Watch that no one reaches back with the hands when falling, since that is the usual cause of wrist injuries. Have students remove earrings and watches first.
