Run and Touch: Log, Rock, Leaf
The teacher scatters a few logs, large rocks, and piles of leaves around the yard, and children run to touch whatever gets called out. It gets everyone moving while building attention, spatial orientation, and nature vocabulary.
How to play
- Take a calm walk around the yard to touch and name each log, each rock, and each leaf pile (1 min).
- The teacher calls "Log!" and everyone walks fast to touch a log; then "Rock!" and "Leaf!" (1 min).
- Now jog gently to touch what's called and come back to the middle (2 min).
- The teacher says how to get there: "hop to the rock," "bear-walk to the log," "tiptoe to the leaves" (1 min).
- Finish by touching each thing with a different body part: elbow, knee, or back (1 min).
Rules
- There's room for lots of us. I don't push to get a touch.
- I touch gently and I don't climb on the rocks.
- I walk back to the middle when the teacher raises a hand.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, just two items (log and rock), walking fast.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all three items and different ways of getting there.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, two-step directions: "first a rock, then a log" or "touch a leaf with your elbow."
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place a log, a rock, and some leaves close to the child's spot so the distances are short, with a buddy alongside.
- Visual impairment: set the items along a wall or guide rope and pair the child with a buddy holding hands.
- Hearing loss: pair each word with a picture or sign (hug for log, fist for rock, falling hand for leaf).
Learning goals
- Recognize and name natural items in the yard.
- Find your way to a specific spot.
- Respond quickly to a direction.
Equipment for a class of 25
- logs: 4
- large rocks: 6
- large leaves
Teacher tip
Put out plenty of each item so kids don't all crowd into one spot. Make sure the rocks are large, stable, and free of sharp edges.
