Row, Row, Row Your Boat, Gently
Sitting in pairs facing each other and holding hands, kids rock back and forth while softly singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." It's a calm-down with slow rocking and breathing.
How to play
- Sit in pairs, legs apart, facing each other and holding hands (1 min).
- Row very slowly: one leans forward while the other leans back (1 min).
- Sing softly and slower each time, like a quiet river (2 min).
- On "life is but a dream," let go and lie back, floating (1 min).
- Breathe like water rising and falling, then sit up slowly (1 min).
Rules
- Pull very gently—no yanking.
- Sing in a whisper voice.
- When the boat stops, we stay still.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, row alone with imaginary oars.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, row in pairs as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, sing as a soft round with two groups starting at different times.
Adaptations
- A wheelchair user rows with arms facing a partner and closes eyes at the end.
- For blind or low-vision kids, the partner gently squeezes hands to mark the rocking.
- Autistic children can row alone or with the teacher.
Learning goals
- Lower heart rate with slow movement.
- Coordinate rocking with a partner.
- Relax with a traditional song.
Teacher tip
Lower your own voice first and kids will follow. If the rocking speeds up, stop and restart slower.
