Rotating Rows: Group-Fitness Warm-Up with a Front-Row Leader
A group-fitness warm-up where the front row leads everyone else and, on the signal, jogs to the back to make room for the next row. Everyone leads a little and practices following and calling changes.

How to play
- Line up in five rows facing front; each row picks a leader and prepares two low-impact moves in 8-count blocks (2 min).
- Full rotation: the front row leads for 1 min with its leader in the middle, then jogs down the side to the back and the next row is up front (5 min).
- Fast round: each row leads about 25 s and turns the intensity up a notch from the last (2 min).
- Debrief: the group votes on which leader called changes best before they happened (1 min).
Rules
- The outgoing row always jogs down the side, never through the middle.
- Low-impact moves only, no sharp spins.
- Leaders call the change on counts 5-6-7-8 of the previous block.
- If you get lost, march in place until you catch up.
Variations
Easier
Slower music (about 115 bpm) and one move per row.
Standard
Two moves per row and music around 125 bpm.
Harder
Each leader adds an easier and a harder option to their move.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the leader uses hand countdowns and stands where everyone can see.
- Limited mobility: the student keeps a fixed spot on the side and leads from there when their row is up.
- Shy students: they can co-lead with a partner.
Learning goals
- Warm up using a group-fitness format.
- Practice cueing changes ahead of time.
- Spread leadership across the whole group.

Teacher tip
Find a playlist with a steady tempo (fitness playlists sorted by bpm are easy to find). The usual mistake is switching moves without a cue: stop the music once and teach the 5-6-7-8 call.
