Roll Call with a Move
At circle time, when the teacher calls a name, that child answers “Here!” with a movement and the whole class copies it. Morning roll call becomes a warm-up where every child adds something to the group.
How to play
- Sit in a circle on the rug while the teacher explains: “Today we don't answer just with our voice, we answer with our body too” (1 min).
- The teacher models with their own name: says “Here!” and bounces twice while seated or raises both arms (1 min).
- The teacher calls each child; they answer with a move (a clap, a stretch, a shoulder wiggle) and everyone copies it twice (1 min).
- Keep calling names; halfway through, the moves are done standing in place (1 min).
- At the end the teacher says “We're all here!” and everyone repeats together the three favorite moves (1 min).
Rules
- When you hear your name, you show your move and everyone copies you.
- If you can't think of one, you can borrow a friend's move.
- We move in our own spot without touching our neighbor.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher offers two moves to choose from (“Clap or wave?”) and the child points.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, each child invents their move and the class repeats it twice.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, each child does their own move plus the previous child's, like a chain.
Adaptations
- Shy children or children with selective mutism: they can answer with the move alone, no words needed.
- Limited mobility: the whole class does every move seated for the entire roll call.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher points to the child while saying their name and faces the group when speaking.
Learning goals
- Wake up the body at the start of the day.
- Imitate movements suggested by classmates.
- Feel seen and part of the group.
Teacher tip
Great for rainy days when you can't go outside: it takes about as long as a regular roll call. If a child suggests something unsafe (fast spinning), turn it into “Let's do it in slow motion.”
