Roll and Chase the Hoop
Each student rolls a hoop across the blacktop and chases it to catch it before it falls, then moves on to partner challenges. It develops hand-eye coordination, adjusting running speed and a cardiovascular warm-up.
How to play
- Each student takes a hoop and lines up on the end line, about 6 feet apart (1 min).
- Teach the roll: hoop upright, hand on top, gentle forward push without tilting it sideways.
- Round 1: roll the hoop, run alongside it and catch it before it falls; jog back carrying it (2 min).
- Round 2: roll the hoop and step through it while it rolls, or jump over it once it lies flat (2 min).
- Round 3 with partners 15 feet apart: roll the hoop back and forth and catch it before it falls; take one step back after each catch (3 min).
- Finish with an easy jog, guiding the hoop with one hand around the whole area without collisions (2 min).
Rules
- Everyone rolls in the same direction, from one end to the other, to avoid collisions.
- Never throw the hoop through the air or at a person.
- If your hoop gets away, pick it up only when no one is running toward you.
- Wait for the signal to start each round.
Variations
Easier
Roll the hoop slowly and simply catch up to it when it stops.
Standard
Roll and catch it before it falls, with the challenges described.
Harder
Roll with the non-dominant hand or add backspin so the hoop comes back to you.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: roll the hoop from a fixed spot to a partner who rolls it back.
- Visual impairment: use a high-contrast hoop and work in a lane marked with cones.
- Fitness level: lengthen or shorten the distance covered on each try.
Learning goals
- Coordinate the hand push with running.
- Match running speed to a moving object.
- Gradually warm up the whole body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 25
Teacher tip
The common mistake is pushing the hoop tilted, so it curves and falls right away: stress keeping it straight. A smooth surface works best; rough ground makes it harder.

Active Blind Man's Bluff
A dynamic version of Blind Man's Bluff in which a guide uses only their voice to lead a blindfolded partner to tag classmates moving inside a small area.
Active Corners
Each corner of the space is marked with a cone and an exercise; the teacher calls a corner and students run to it to complete the exercise.
Animal Races
Students move around the space imitating different animals: bear walks, frog jumps, crab walks, and kangaroo hops, with short races between lines.
Around the World
Different areas of the playground become continents, and students travel between them using the locomotor move the teacher calls out.
Balance Pose Challenge
Students hold balance poses alone, then in pairs and small groups with a limited number of body parts touching the floor.
Balance the Pole on Your Palm
Each student tries to balance a pole upright on the palm of the hand, first standing still and then walking, switching hands and heights.
