Reactive First Touch: The Color Sets Your Body Shape
In pairs, one player passes and, while the ball is traveling, raises a colored cone that tells the partner which gate to take the first touch toward. Students warm up while working on body shape, scanning before receiving and controlling with the far foot.
How to play
- Each pair sets up a triangle: the passer 8 m from the receiver and two cone gates, red and blue, 3 m to each side of the receiver (2 min).
- Round 1: the passer shows the color as the pass is released and the receiver takes one touch toward that gate and dribbles through it (2 min).
- Round 2: the color is shown when the ball is halfway there, so the receiver must scan before receiving (2 min).
- Round 3: no colors; after passing, the passer jogs in to apply light pressure and the receiver turns away from the side the passer comes from (3 min).
- Switch roles every six passes and finish with a quick question: which foot did you use each time and why? (1 min).
Rules
- The first touch is a single touch that leaves the ball facing the called gate.
- In round 3 the passer pressures without contact, only closing one path.
- Pairs work at least 5 m apart so balls do not cross.
- The receiver checks over the shoulder before every pass.
Variations
Easier
Show the color before the pass and allow a second touch to turn.
Standard
Color shown halfway and a one-touch directional first touch toward the called gate.
Harder
The pass arrives bouncing or at mid height and the gate is called out loud instead of shown with a cone.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the color is already visual; add a big arm gesture toward the gate to reinforce it.
- Partial visual impairment: large high-contrast cones and a brightly colored ball, with the passer 5 m away.
- Minor ankle injury: controls with the sole of the healthy foot without pivoting and only does rounds 1 and 2.
Learning goals
- Take the first touch into open space.
- Pick up information before receiving the ball.
- Choose the controlling surface and foot based on the situation.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 80
- balls: 14
Teacher tip
Keep stressing an open body shape, with the hips facing the middle of the field before receiving. If many touches go wrong, slow the passes down before removing the challenge.
