Rag Doll or Stick? My Partner Checks
Children switch between being stick dolls, stiff as a board, and rag dolls, all floppy; a partner gently lifts an arm or leg to check if they're relaxed. It teaches the difference between tense and relaxed.
How to play
- The teacher shows two pretend dolls: the stick doll, all stiff, and the rag doll, which flops like a sock (1 min).
- Standing, we all become stick dolls squeezing our whole body, then rag dolls letting arms and head drop; three times (1 min).
- In pairs, one lies face up as a rag doll and the other lifts an arm by the wrist and gently lets it down onto the mat (1 min).
- Try the other hand and one leg lifted by the ankle; if it's stiff, we say "Uh-oh, a stick!" and give it a gentle wiggle (1 min).
- Switch roles (1 min).
- Everyone lies still as rag dolls while the teacher walks around and gently moves a hand here and there (1 min).
Rules
- I lift my partner's arm just a little and lower it slowly.
- The rag doll doesn't help; it just lets go.
- No pulling or dragging.
- We talk softly.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, no pairs: the teacher visits each child and checks their arms.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, in pairs with arms and legs.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the checker tries to feel if the arm is "half stick" and tells their partner so they can let go more.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: check only the arms, seated in a chair.
- Autism: they can check a real doll or do only the standing part without being touched.
- Visual impairment: the teacher first lets them feel the difference between stiff and floppy on their own arm.
Learning goals
- Tell the difference between tense and relaxed muscles.
- Let go of the body while trusting a partner.
- Move someone else carefully.
Teacher tip
With a volunteer, show how to lift the arm just a few inches and let it land on your hand before it reaches the mat. Many kids "help" by lifting the arm themselves; laugh along and remind them rag dolls have no muscles.
