Precision Thrower Activation: Roll, Swing and Aim
A sport-specific warm-up for bowling, rana, chito or calva lessons: students loosen up the wrists, shoulders, hips and trunk and then chain rolling and arcing throws that get more and more precise. It gets the body and the mind ready to throw with control.
How to play
- In pairs, one student leads the other through joint mobility: wrist, shoulder and hip circles and trunk rotations with arms crossed (2 min).
- Forward and reverse lunges with a big swing of the throwing arm, copying the release of a rolled bowl; eight reps per side (2 min).
- Gently roll a tennis ball to a partner 5 m away, alternating dominant and non-dominant hand (2 min).
- Underhand arcing throw to a hoop on the ground 6 m away; anyone who hits two in a row moves back to 8 m (2 min).
- Each student rates their aim and how warm their shoulder feels from 1 to 10, and the pair suggests which area still needs activating before the main activity (2 min).
Rules
- Everyone throws in the same direction, toward the area marked with cones.
- Nobody crosses the throwing line to collect balls until the pickup signal.
- Swings are wide but controlled, with no jerky bouncing.
- Always alternate hands so one shoulder doesn't take all the load.
Variations
Easier
Place the hoop 4 m away and throw with the dominant hand only.
Standard
Guided mobility plus rolling and arcing throws at 6 and 8 m.
Harder
Put a small hoop inside the big one; only hits inside the small hoop count.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: throws seated with a sideways arm swing and the hoop 4 m away.
- Visual impairment: the partner claps from the hoop before every throw.
- Shoulder discomfort: does the mobility with a smaller range and only rolls the ball with the other hand.
Learning goals
- Mobilize the joints used in traditional precision throwing games.
- Gradually adjust throwing force and trajectory.
- Self-assess readiness before the main activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 15
- hoops: 15
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Line all pairs up facing the same wall or fence so throwing paths never cross. If the lesson is rana or chito, finish with throws from that exact distance.
