Planes and Axes: Joint Warm-Up by Anatomical Planes
A warm-up where each mobility and activation block is organized by the anatomical plane the body moves in: sagittal, frontal and transverse. Students name the plane and axis of each exercise as they do it, linking anatomy to getting ready for exercise.
How to play
- Explain the planes with three gestures: sagittal like nodding, frontal like a jumping jack and transverse like a trunk twist (2 min).
- Sagittal block: skipping, front-to-back leg swings and forward lunges between cones (3 min).
- Frontal block: side shuffles, side leg swings, jumping jacks and lateral lunges (2 min).
- Transverse block: lunge with a trunk rotation, running with hip turns and imaginary throws with rotation (2 min).
- Wrap-up: the teacher names a plane and each student suggests a move in that plane that everyone copies (1 min).
Rules
- Trunk twists are controlled with no bouncing.
- Keep two arm's lengths from classmates during swings.
- Intensity increases gradually from one block to the next.
Variations
Easier
Work only the sagittal and frontal planes with exercises in place.
Standard
Three plane-based blocks with traveling moves and student suggestions at the end.
Harder
Each student must also name the axis of rotation and the main joint for each exercise.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work all three planes with arms, neck and trunk from the chair.
- Visual impairment: a partner describes the exercise and guides the body part the first time.
- Ankle injury: replace jumping jacks with arm openings and slow lateral lunges.
Learning goals
- Warm up the main joints in all three planes of movement.
- Identify anatomical planes and axes in real exercises.
- Design complete warm-ups that don't leave out any plane.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 12
- worksheets: 28
Teacher tip
Many warm-ups stay in the sagittal plane: this format helps students notice it when designing their own. Coordinate with the applied anatomy class if offered.
