Pattern Massage: Tap, Stroke, Tap
In pairs, one child does a repeating series of gentle touches on a partner's back (tap, stroke, tap, stroke…) and the partner guesses what comes next. It builds recognizing patterns by touch and relaxing together.
How to play
- Sitting in a circle, the teacher shows two touches on a stuffed animal's or a volunteer's back: a fingertip tap and an open-hand stroke (1 min).
- In pairs, one sits in front and the other behind; the one behind does the pattern "tap, stroke, tap, stroke" slowly on the back (1 min).
- The one in front whispers which touch is coming next before it arrives (1 min).
- We switch roles and add a new pattern: "tap, tap, stroke," or a third touch, finger rain (2 min).
- We finish with one long stroke from head to waist and thank our partner (1 min).
Rules
- Hands are soft, like feathers.
- If my partner doesn't like it, I change the touch or stop.
- We speak very softly.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher says the pattern out loud and children do it on their own tummy or on a stuffed animal.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, two-touch patterns in pairs.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, three-touch patterns invented by the giver that the partner has to figure out.
Adaptations
- Child with limited mobility: the massage is done on arms or hands if the back isn't reachable.
- Autistic child or child sensitive to touch: the pattern is done on a stuffed animal or ball the child holds, with no direct contact.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing child: answers by pointing to a card with a picture of the touch.
Learning goals
- Recognize and continue a pattern of touches.
- Notice different kinds of touch.
- Relax respectfully with a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- música suave
Teacher tip
Always ask permission first: "May I give you a massage?" Keep the music very low and say the pattern quietly yourself the first few times.
