Pass to the Beat Circles
In circles of six, students pass a ball on the beat of a song while stepping in rhythm. Extra balls, direction changes and new pass types are added along the way, building hand-eye coordination, rhythm and focus.
How to play
- Make 4 circles of 6 (one of 7) with 2 m between classmates and 4 m between circles. Play a song at about 110-120 beats per minute and have everyone step-touch side to side on the beat (1 min).
- One ball per circle: pass it to the right every 2 beats with a chest pass while keeping the step-touch going (2 min).
- When the chorus starts, switch passing direction. If the ball drops, pick it up and keep going without losing the step (1 min).
- Add a second ball on the opposite side of the circle: now students catch and pass at the same time, always on the beat (2 min).
- Every 8 counts, change the pass: chest, bounce, overhead and back to chest (1 min).
- Final challenge: each circle counts how many passes in a row it makes in one minute without losing the beat (1 min).
Rules
- The pass goes on the beat, not before or after; if the ball arrives early, hold it and wait.
- Keep the step-touch going the whole time.
- Pass to your partner's chest, never to the face.
- Safety: walk to collect a loose ball and don't cut through other circles.
Variations
Easier
One ball only, passing every 4 beats with no step-touch.
Standard
Pass every 2 beats with a step-touch, a direction change on the chorus and two balls per circle.
Harder
Three balls per circle and a faster song at about 130 beats per minute.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student catches and passes seated or from a wheelchair, and classmates send bounce passes to make catching easier.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows the beat by raising and lowering an arm, and a classmate signals the direction change by hand.
- Lower skill level: use a bigger, slower foam ball and pass every 4 beats.
Learning goals
- Match passing and catching to a steady musical beat.
- Coordinate arm actions with a side step.
- Stay focused on a shared group task.

Teacher tip
Choose a song with a very clear beat and no tempo changes. Count one-two out loud at first and stop as soon as the class has the rhythm.
