Partner Roll-and-Save Cone Gates
In pairs, one student rolls a foam ball toward one of two cone gates guarded by a partner, who slides sideways to stop it. Students work on reaction time, lateral movement, and fielding rolled balls.
How to play
- In pairs with one ball; the defender sets up two cone gates about one yard wide and 3 yards apart, then stands in the middle (1 min).
- The roller, 5 yards away, rolls the ball one-handed toward either gate; the defender shuffles sideways without crossing feet and stops it with the hands (2 min).
- After each save, the defender rolls the ball back and returns to the middle before the next roll; switch roles every 8 rolls.
- Fake variation: the roller fakes toward one gate before rolling; the defender waits in a ready position with knees bent (2 min).
- Scoring: each save is a point for the defender and each ball through a gate is a point for the roller; switch roles after 8 rolls and switch partners every two rounds (3 min).
Rules
- Always roll the ball along the ground, never bounced or in the air.
- The defender stops the ball with the hands, without diving.
- The roller waits until the defender is back in the middle.
- All pairs line up side by side, facing the same direction.
Variations
Easier
One wide gate and slow rolls from 4 yards.
Standard
Two one-yard gates 3 yards apart, with rolls from 5 yards.
Harder
Three gates, or only foot saves like a soccer goalie.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: defend a single narrower gate from the wheelchair, using a pole to block the ball if needed.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell or have the roller call "Ball!" and say which side.
- Skill level: adjust the roller's distance to the defender's speed so there are both saves and goals.
Learning goals
- React quickly to the path of a rolling ball.
- Move sideways from a good ready position.
- Respect turns and the scoring system.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Foam balls: 13
- Cones: 52
Teacher tip
Have every pair face the same direction so a loose ball never rolls into another pair's space. Keep reinforcing the ready position: feet apart, knees bent, hands low.
