Partner-Rescue Tag With a Mirror Challenge
A tag game with no elimination where tagged players freeze with arms out and can only return to play when two free teammates surround them and do three synchronized squats together. It raises heart rate and requires teaming up to help others.
How to play
- Quick joint mobility in place while you explain the rules and hand pinnies to three taggers (2 min).
- Round 1: tagged players freeze with arms out; two free classmates hold hands around them and do three squats together, counting out loud, to free them (2 min).
- Round 2: switch taggers, and the rescue becomes three mirrored alternating lunges (2 min).
- Round 3: taggers hold hands in pairs, and the rescue challenge is a jumping high five with each rescuer (2 min).
Rules
- Tag gently on the back or shoulders; never push or grab clothing.
- No one can be tagged while doing the rescue challenge.
- Taggers can't wait next to a frozen player.
Variations
Easier
A single rescuer is enough to free a frozen player.
Standard
Three taggers and partner rescues with a mirror challenge that changes each round.
Harder
Rescuers must be two people who haven't rescued together before.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student tags with a soft foam noodle for extra reach or rescues in a nearby zone.
- Hearing impairment: the start and end of each round are signaled by raising a colored pinnie.
- Knee injury: the student swaps squats and lunges for calf raises or arm movements.
Learning goals
- Gradually raise heart rate through an active game.
- Cooperate to help classmates get back into the game.
- Coordinate mirrored movements with others.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pinnies: 6
Teacher tip
Adjust the number of taggers to the size of the space so no one stays frozen more than a few seconds. On small courts, mark boundaries with cones to keep students away from walls.
