Partner Color Reaction Sprints
A partner neuromuscular activation drill: one partner calls or shows a color and the other sprints as fast as possible to the cone of that color, placed in different directions. It trains reaction time, first-step acceleration, and changes of direction right before the main activity.
How to play
- Each pair sets 4 cones of different colors in a cross, about 5 yards from a center cone. Minute 0-1: easy jog touching all four cones.
- Minutes 1-3: the worker waits in the center in an athletic stance; the partner calls a color, and the worker sprints, touches the cone, and returns. 6 sprints, then switch.
- Minutes 3-5: the partner stops talking and instead holds up a small cone of the chosen color. 6 sprints each.
- Minutes 5-7: starts from different positions (facing away, sitting, lying face down), with the color called or shown at random.
- Minute 7-8: final challenge: two colors in a row to be touched in that order; each student counts correct responses.
Rules
- Rest at least 10 seconds between sprints to keep the quality high.
- Touch the cone with your hand, slowing down first with short steps.
- Pairs keep about 10 feet from the pairs around them.
Variations
Easier
Only two cones, front and back, and always a verbal call.
Standard
Four cones in a cross with verbal and visual cues.
Harder
The partner fakes it (calls one color and shows another), and the shown color counts.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, move the cones to about 3 yards and push toward the cone to touch it.
- Visual impairment: use only verbal calls and cones with a distinct sound or texture.
- Low fitness: shorter distance of about 3 yards and longer rests.
Learning goals
- Improve reaction time to visual and auditory cues.
- Improve acceleration and braking in the first steps.
- Prime the nervous system before high-intensity work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 60
Teacher tip
This is a high-intensity warm-up: use it after a few minutes of mobility, never cold. Short rests ruin the drill, so make sure students respect them.
