Parachute on the Move: Waves, Dome and Crossings
The whole group holds the parachute and warms up with circular movement, waves and crossings under the dome. Heart rate and body temperature go up while the group learns to move to a shared rhythm.
How to play
- Everyone grips the edge with both hands and circles walking, then jogging and then side-shuffling, changing direction on the signal (2 min).
- Waves: toss the six foam balls into the middle and bounce them without letting them fly out, switching between small fast waves and big slow waves with bent knees (2 min).
- Dome and crossings: lift the parachute and the teacher calls out a birth month; students born that month cross underneath with the named movement (skipping, lunges, crawling) before it comes down (3 min).
- Group mobility: as the parachute goes down everyone drops into a deep squat, and as it goes up they rise onto their toes with arms extended; ten reps at a shared pace (2 min).
- A student volunteer leads the last dome and the group rates in one sentence whether the rhythm was shared (1 min).
Rules
- Always hold the parachute with both hands and never wrap it around your wrists.
- When crossing underneath, look ahead and stay in your own lane so nobody bumps heads.
- Nobody hangs on the parachute or yanks it backward.
- Balls are picked up only when the teacher says so.
Variations
Easier
Students walk across and the dome is held at full height.
Standard
Waves, dome with category crossings and group mobility at the group's pace.
Harder
Students crossing must high-five someone crossing the other way before coming out.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: hold the edge from their spot and cross underneath with a partner who helps time it.
- Hearing impairment: signals for up, down and cross are given with big gestures agreed on beforehand.
- Autism: always keep the same spot on the edge next to a trusted classmate, and may skip crossing in the first rounds.
Learning goals
- Raise heart rate gradually through varied movement.
- Coordinate one's own movement with the rhythm of the whole group.
- Lead a group cue clearly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- parachute: 1
- foam balls: 6
Teacher tip
If the parachute is too small for 30 students, run two crossing shifts or use two parachutes. Crossing categories (month, favorite sport, number of siblings) mix the group effortlessly.
